album: METROPOLIS
group: Sy Rogers
Sy's debut album of nine original songs was released internationally in 1996 on the singaporean label MTX. Though just a humble studio album for the local market, Metropolis was eventually distributed in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Based loosely on the 1926 Fritz Lang cult film of the same name, Metropolis is a satirically dark view of society, dressed in a retro Asian dance pop style.

Sy's Comments on
His Music:
"I suppose I’ll not be remembered for my music. Still, musical expression remains a part of my personal growth and a platform for additional ministry. I have also written a new album's worth of songs I hope to record yet. Having said this, the world is full of music. But it is not full of my kind of teaching. So, I decided a while back to make my spoken word messages the priority at this time. It’s nice of God to have allowed me to enjoy both."
"Like most people, I’m into all kinds of music. Across the genres...from Electronica to Chill Out...from Country to Indie to Rock to Black Gospel. Of course there's worship music too, from the contemplative Gregorian chanting to hymns reinvigorated, to the global pop rock of United to Folksy-tender too. I love it that post-post modernity has broken the mold allowing creativity to flourish especially in church culture once again (--something that those under 40 cannot fully appreciate). Of course, one should always remember, culture is a flowing river. What's fresh, cool, hip and hot today in art, music and even trends in worship, wont be so in just a few orbits around the sun. What will worship be like in 20 years or 50 if civilization lasts? "
"Having been a worship leader in a major church, I recognized that God doesnt need us to sing adjectives about Him up to the Heavens. That's not so much worship FOR HIM, as it is worship to refocus me: after a stressful week, unpaid debt, struggle with flesh, tiff with the wife or kid on the way to church, I need to regain my focus: on God. God who is bigger than my stuff. Big and Good to me...deserving of my confidence. Wanting my surrender, offering His embrace that cleanses and lifts the burdens and assures of love. Leading people into that Presence becomes therapeutic. As for God, I recall Him saying 'People worship me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me'. Turning Hearts back to God is indeed part of worship, but God says if you really love me, prove it in the way you behave, in what you do, and in how you value and serve others. That proves what we really value. And that is our purest worship."
